Shehbaz Sharif Secures Position as Prime Minister of Pakistan:

On March 3, 2024, Shehbaz Sharif ascended to the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan following his election by the nation's National Assembly. This marks Sharif's second tenure as Prime Minister, having previously held the position from April 2022 to August 2023.
Amid Controversy, Elections Pave the Way:
Sharif's election follows a contentious parliamentary election held on February 8th. The electoral process was marred by allegations of manipulation and delayed result announcements. Despite the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, winning the most seats, they claimed their victory was undermined by electoral malpractice.
Nevertheless, a coalition led by Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured a majority of seats. With PTI members excluded from the National Assembly due to alleged electoral misconduct, Sharif clinched the Prime Ministerial vote with 201 votes to 92.
A Turbulent National Assembly Session:
The National Assembly session during the election was tumultuous, with PTI-aligned lawmakers protesting and alleging electoral fraud. In his victory speech, Sharif refuted these claims, expressing gratitude to his PML-N and PPP supporters. He emphasized the need for political stability amidst economic and security challenges.
Opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan defended Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated since last August on various charges, including divulging state secrets.
The Revival of the Sharif Political Dynasty:
The election heralds the resurgence of the influential Sharif political lineage. Shehbaz Sharif has assumed leadership of the PML-N from his elder sibling Nawaz Sharif, a thrice former Prime Minister. Nawaz returned from exile in 2022 with hopes of reclaiming power but remains entangled in past corruption convictions.
With Shehbaz as Prime Minister, their niece Maryam Nawaz made history this month by becoming the first female Chief Minister of Punjab province. Thus, the Sharif family has regained political ascendancy following Khan's attempts to sideline them.
Challenges Ahead for the New Administration
The newly formed PML-N-led coalition government faces substantial hurdles, foremost among them the task of revitalizing the faltering economy. Skyrocketing inflation, dwindling foreign reserves, and a currency in freefall have placed Pakistan at risk of defaulting on its debts. Securing a bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be a pressing priority.
Secondly, the government must confront the pervasive militancy and onslaughts by the Pakistan Taliban (TTP). Exploiting the political upheaval, the Taliban perpetrated their deadliest year on record in 2022. Enhancing security measures and bolstering counterterrorism capabilities are imperative.
Lastly, the government must address the civil disobedience campaign launched by Imran Khan's PTI party. Khan demands fresh elections, a proposition the government has rebuffed
