National science day

National science day

Every year on February 28th, India celebrates National Science Day, marking the unveiling of the Raman Effect by Sir C.V.Raman on February 28, 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930.

Origin of National Science Day

The National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed the idea of observing National Science Day on February 28th in 1986. The Government of India accepted the proposal, and since then, the day has been celebrated nationwide.

Purpose of National Science Day

The primary objective of National Science Day is to emphasize the significance of science in everyday life. It provides a platform to discuss advancements and innovations in the field of science and to encourage the adoption of new technologies.

Theme of National Science Day 2024

The theme for this year's National Science Day is 'Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat,' underscoring the importance of domestically developed technologies in shaping India's future.

Departmental Initiatives

The Department of Science and Technology organized an event in New Delhi to honor Sir C.V. Raman's groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect. During the event, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated an exhibition showcasing various innovative projects selected under the Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science.

About the Raman Effect

The Raman Effect refers to the inelastic scattering of photons by matter, resulting in an exchange of energy and a change in the direction of light. This phenomenon involves the transfer of vibrational energy gained by molecules when incident photons from visible lasers shift to lower energy levels. It occurs when light interacts with the electron density of chemical bonds, leading to vibrational and frequency shift deformations in the molecule.

National Council for Science and Technology Communication:

The National Council for Science and Technology Communication operates under the jurisdiction of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Its primary objectives include fostering scientific thinking, promoting scientific knowledge, conducting training programs, and raising awareness about science and technology among the masses
