First needle free vaccine – approved for primary immunization:

The country’s first intranasal vaccine had recently received DCGI approval for primary immunization for people above 18 years of age.

Key Points:

The first intranasal COVID vaccine had been named as ChAd36-SARS-CoV-S COVID -19.

This was developed by Bharat Biotech and it was the first needle free vaccine.

Before approval, this vaccine was tested on 4000 volunteers by Hyderabad-based Bharat biotech International Limited and proved to be effective.

After that, this vaccine was approved to use only under emergency situations for 18 years and above.

Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL)

The headquarters of BBIL is in Hyderabad. The company is engaged in discovering and developing drug, manufacturing vaccines, pharmaceuticals and health care products. It was established in 1996.

Intranasal Vaccine:

ChAd36-SARS-CoV-S COVID -19 was the first intranasal vaccine which is given without the help of needle. It would prove to be safer and effective option for middle income countries. It also enhances the immune system and in addition to it, it activates IgG, mucosal IgA and T cell responses which inhibits infection.

Scalability would not be a problem with this new vaccine. Through this vaccine, we could increase the thin mucus membrane cells of the nose and mouth, from where the Sars-CoV-2 virus enters the body. Therefore, it could prevent the virus from replicating and spreading to lungs and other parts of the body.
