Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022

Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022

Environment Ministry has been recently notified  that Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 for eco-friendly disposal of the  defective batteries. These rules will be  replace the Battery (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001.

Key Points

  • These regulations covers  all types of batteries such as electric vehicle batteries, portable batteries, automotive batteries and industrial batteries etc.
  • Based on the concept of Extended Manufacturer Responsibility (EPR),the  battery manufacturers (including importers) are the responsible for the collection and recycling/renewal of waste batteries and the use of waste materials in new batteries.
  • The EPR mandates the collection of all waste batteries and sends them for recycling/renewal, and prohibits their disposal in landfills and incineration.
  • These rules will make it possible to set up a centralized online portal for exchange of EPR certificates between the  producers and the  recyclers/renewers to meet the obligations of the producers.

Reduce dependence on raw materials

These rules encourage the  setting up of new industries and entrepreneurship in the collection and recycling/refurbishment of waste batteries. Under this, by prescribing the use of a certain amount of recycled materials in the manufacture of new batteries, the dependence on new raw materials will be reduced and natural resources will be saved.
