India has presumed the Chairmanship of the Governing Body of International Labour Organization after 35 years. This has become a new milestone since it was not possible in the last 100 years.  It has enhanced the relationship between India and International Labour Organisation (ILO).  The Secretary of Labour and Employment department, Shri Apurva Chandra, has been selected as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the (ILO). Shri Apurva Chandra will be the Chairman from October 2020- June 2021.  Serving as the Chairperson of the Governing Body of the ILO is regarded as an esteemed and prestigious position.


The Governing Body of the ILO has the authority to manifest policies, programmes, agenda, budget and even has the right to elect the Director-General. Currently, there are about 187 members in ILO. Shri Apurva Chandra will decide on the events of the upcoming meeting in November, where he would get an opportunity to have interactions with the other senior officers and partners of the member states in Geneva.


It is noteworthy to mention that Shri Apurva Chandra belongs to the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He has also spent seven years in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Moreover, he has worked as the Principal Secretary for Industries in Maharashtra and also served as the Director General in the Ministry of Defence. Shri Apurva Chandra was also in the committee to draft the new Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020.
