RBI Annual Report:  Rs. 2000 notes were not printed in 2019-2020

Key points :

Reserve Bank of India reported that Currency notes of Rs.2000 were not printed during 2019- 2020. The supply of banknotes was lowered to 23.3 % than the previous year due to Covid-19.

RBI report:

Ø               March-end 2018 – 33,632 lakh pieces of Rs.2000 were in circulation. 

     March – end 2019– the number of pieces of Rs.2000 is 33,910 lakh.

     Further, it is down to 27,398 lakh pieces in March-end,2020.

Ø               Initially, the total volume of Rs.2000 notes was 3.3% at the end of March 2018 and came down to 3% in March 2019.

     In March end 2020, the value is reduced to 2.4% from total volume.

Ø                During the end of March 2018, the share value was 37.3%. The share also came down to 22.6 % at the end of March 2020 from the value of 31.2 % in March 2019.

From 2018 to 2020, the value and share of currency notes Rs.500 and Rs.200 have increased appreciably.

BRBNMPL and SPMCIL have received the order for printing currency notes, during 2019-20.

·        Rs 100 (330 crore pieces)

·        Rs 50    (240 crore pieces)

·        Rs 200 (205 crore pieces)

·        Rs 10    (147 crore pieces)

·        Rs 20    (125 crore pieces) 

The report also stated that a total of 2,96,695 pieces of counterfeit notes were detected in 2019-2020.
